National Boards Mentoring and ResourcesGoing through the National Boards Process alone, and even with others, can be a frustrating and overwhelming experience. I would know since I certified in 2017 and completed all four components in one year. I then became a Candidate Support Provider for my district in order to help other candidates. Since then I have worked with over hundreds of National Boards Candidates, all grade levels and different certificate areas. I am extremely passionate about the process, as I feel that it was the greatest challenge I've ever faced as a teacher, and it made me reflect upon all of my Tier 1 practices. It made me better, period!
My experience has taught me a great deal about what it takes to be successful in becoming a National Boards Certified Teacher. Here are a few tips:
1. Read ALL directions thoroughly, multiple times, annotating as you go along. Do not skip over anything. Once you've read them, read them again. There have been candidates who have not certified because they did not read directions thoroughly and did not format evidence correctly or accidentally submitted the wrong video and/or evidence. Pay close attention to the Submission at a Glance Page and follow all directions.
2. Closely read your NB Certificate Area Standards, taking notes as you go. The standards are what tell you exactly what a NB Certified teacher is like in your specific area. As you write your forms and written commentary, and film you videos--think about what the standards say. You must connect everything you do to the standards .
3. Be familiar with the Five Core Propositions and the Architecture of Accomplished Teaching. Go through the Five Core Propositions and the AAT and think about how they connect to your standards and support and relate to one another. This is something you'll want to keep in mind as you write your written commentaries.
4. Join a cohort or social media group! You are not alone in this. You can check out my TikTok page (@spiritus.mundi5) or my Instagram page (spiritus.mundi5) for videos that have tips.
